Read your gmail from Firefox
I have a gmail account but hardly ever use it (because I have to login manually and check it). But I’m downloading the Gmail Notifier so I can check my mail in Firefox. One day I might learn to write my own Firefox extension.
Or maybe I should just upgrade my iBook
Hardmac.com has a A step-by-step guide to turn your iBook12″ into a PowerBook12″-killer. Am I brave enough to try it?! Probably not. Besides, it seems Intel-based iBooks are coming in January…
Comparing Apples (iBooks) with Apple (Powerbooks)
The Applecart has a handy chart comparing Apples with Apples. I’d love to get a new Mac – something which can handle multi-track recording and editing as well as live playback – but I’m torn between 14″ iBook, 15″ Powerbook or 17″ iMac…*sigh*

Cool site of the day: thecooler.co.za
Rob Luce is a musician who owns Cooler – a studio in Johannesburg which isn’t just a place to record – it’s a creative space. Rob says, “I believe that if you want to make great recordings you must start with an environment in which producers, musicians and engineers can relax and be creative.”
Man – the picture of the studio is SUPERB! Great lighting, lots of space, 2 recording booths (2!) and a comfy-looking couch. Schweet.

Extending my iBook desktop
I have a lovely Mac laptop which has some interesting quirks. One of which is my screen->out function: it only lets me mirror my desktop on external displays – not extend it. This is one of my big reasons for wanting to upgrade to a powerbook. However, some nice German guy has published the Screen Spanning Doctor. The only problem is I have to reboot after installing it. And I’ve been running without crashing or rebooting for: Uptime: 31 days 1:31
Apple boot keys
I wanted to know how to boot our G5 using a different startup disk…turns out all I need to do is hold down the “option” key (that’s “alt” for everyone else). Source: http://www.jacsoft.co.nz/Tech_Notes/Mac_Keys.htm

Cool site of the day – banksy.co.uk
Banksy is a graffiti artist who goes around and (amongst other things) sneaks random bits of “art” into museums, expecting art critics to fawn over how “brilliant” it is. Like this rat in wraparound sunglasses, carrying a rucksack and a microphone under the spraypainted caption, “Our time will come,” snuck into the Natural History Museum.
. And here’s a caveman pushing a supermarket trolley! Genius.
Biggest SA search engine to launch this month
Jonga.co.za launches this month – and claims to be a decent SA search engine. Shaun Dewberry reviews the sneak preview. I don’t use any SA search engines for SA stuff – just Google.co.za. Ananzi…yeah right. Aardvark – nice, I just don’t use it. Funnel is new. But Jonga might be just what the doctor ordered.
