hi there

I recently bought the airport extreme and seem to be struggling to get connected to the internet.

Previously we were using a standard ADSL modem with MWEB as the ISP .. no problems.

My understanding is that the airport extreme is the complete solution, that no additional modem is required. I've connected the cable via the splitter into the basestation, however no joy! I have setup the network using PPPoE etc.

Help?

Hi. Hope someone can help. Please!
I just went through all the info regarding this article, but I'm still not sure what to do.
I had my Telkom ADSL line installed yesterday and I'm using their free modem.
The technician gave me a number to phone to get my username and password. I phoned and the lady guided me through getting the modem setup (10.0.0.2, admin, admin...)
Internet and email works fine, but as soon as I unplug the ethernet cable from my pc, the connection stops. I have a wireless network card in my pc and would like to connect wirelessly.
I also have an iMac which picks up the signal and connects to the network (which i named Home Network), but I can't connect to the internet.
I would also like to connect to this network/internet on my ipad2 and iphone and don't know where to start.
Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Roger!
I am moving from a bush house to an area with ADSL. Why you recommend the 384 home line? Is it fast enough?

@ted: once logged into the router, you have to configure it to connect to the internet - at some point you'll have to put in your username/password for your ISP.

Hi Roger. I have laughed my way through your advice. You have a great easy way of giving it. Now I am not blonde but gray and not a young lady but a 61 year old granny and have been on adsl for a month. I wish I had kept a record of the hrs but I dealt with 14 technicians from Telkom the week I SET UP THE WHOLE THING MYSELF. To my amazement and this is the honest truth only i of those technicians was rude and unhelpful. Every one of them male and female were absolutely amazing took the time to explain sometimes more than once and I am now like a pro. So I have to say 100% for telkom internet services on this one. i am not going to apologise for being a woman. My 36 year old son thinks I'm awesome. Here is my question. When I was on dial up and on closer op 2 i skyped all over the world during callmore time. My webcam and modem etc are all correctly set up but I just cant get through to anyone. I take it there is now some secret i have missed or it is now going to be pay up! ! ! Help Thanks Dee

@Peter, those Windows-only modem config cd's are absolutely crap, IMHO. Which is ironic, since the only 3 things I've ever need to configure are:

1. My admin username and password for the router.
2. Turning on the wifi and giving it a password.
3. Putting in a username and password for my ISP.

I don't think I've ever got one of those install cd's to get these basic things working. The good news is, you can do it yourself, without needing Windows :)

But first, back to your Mac - you shouldn't be connecting on your Mac to the internet using PPPoE - you should rather set your modem to be always connected to the internet, and then share that internet connection via the router's Wifi. That also simplified the setup of new computers on your network - all they need is your wifi password and to set their IP addresses to be automatically assigned via DHCP.

So, time to go back to your modem and make sure that it's connecting to the internet using a PPPoE connection...
