Getting Fiesty on a MacBook Pro with Parallels Desktop

Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn is out and I picked up a copy from my local dealer. Since I’m running Parallels Desktop on my Mac it’s a simple task to create a new instance of Parallels along with a new Virtual Machine (I usually use “Debian”) and go ahead with the install. Except during my install it couldn’t detect my cd-rom drive and so the install halted. Thanks to some tips I found that the solution is to simply change the OS Type to Solaris and the OS Version to Solaris 10. Once it’s installed change it back to “Debian” or “Other Linux Kernel 2.6″.

Hey there. Good to see other South Africans doing some Ubuntu/Parallels stuff too.

I completed my own install last night. Did about 6 in total and then found the exact set of settings. I also had to do the Solaris install and then change it after rebooting the virtual machine.

I have found some great info on getting the screen resolution changed. Here is the link:

    Have a great one!

Thanks for that tip, Mark – I’ve got an unpublished post about changing screen resolution but your link is way more in-depth! I was at the Feisty Launch Party in Joburg last Saturday but haven’t seen many local guys playing with Macs and Linux…

    Hey Roger

Lets be honest, who would want to install anything anywhere else anymore. Have you seen the news about the 8core Mac soon? Not too sure of the price but its in the region of R40k. Yikes

At the launch: was there much buss from the local development team?

R40k is a *lot* to pay for any computer! And Macs are more expensive here than overseas, although I met a music producer yesterday who buys his Apple through eBay and hasn’t had a problem with that.

It was more of a release party than a launch party and there weren’t any of the development team there. If we can build more interest in the future release parties then maybe we can persuade some of them to join us…!

I havnt thought to do the eBay thing for a computer yet. How about picking it up from the seller. After all an Apple is worth the trip. Call it dedication – :)

Hey R, I stumbled across your site. It is great to see a Mac fanatic in South Africa. There seem to be more and more of us as each day passes (and parallels becomes more popular!) Anyway, if you’re interested check out a few of my Macs (at last count there were well over 10) and other computers in my flickr stream.

Keep up the great work! I’ll be back.
