BarCampJozi: Summary

BarCamp was great! My head was spinning so much afterwards but it was worth it – thanks, guys (and D) for the crazy weekend, and thanks Anton for the mopani worms.

Mopani worms

And thanks Diricia for the bondage lesson! Danie was the lucky guy who got to enjoy this demo in a very personal way!

A lesson in bondage

Mike has recorded his summary of events in his succint way. Here’s everything else I haven’t yet recorded:

BarCampJozi: Getting Things Done

BarCampJozi: Torque game engine and Star Control 2

Great presentation on the Torque game engine which costs $100 for an Indie license. Game development looks fun! The trend now seems to be the same as in the Hollywood animation scene: more focus on script – just like the games 10-15 years ago. Thanks to Danie for directing me to the open source StarCon2 download – hooray! That’s probably my favourite game ever – thanks for the link :)

BarCampJozi: Telecoms Action Group

Richard from Tectonic is talking about putting a full page spread into the Mail & Guardian raising awareness about Telkom’s inefficiency and calling Neotel to the greater good. They’ve set up a site and have already exceeded the R50,000 required. You can count me in, Richard!

BarCampJozi: Carl Spies – Systems Thinking

Really interesting, Carl – definitely have to hang out with you sometime and get some more info. Am interested in the group idea you talked about, but really don’t have anything to contribute – would just be interested in beginning to read some of the stuff you have.

BarCampJozi: The history of our future

Jaco Meiring had a great little thought-provoking slot on open source, web 2.0, business, great books to read, and his great tech toy: a bookmark from his daughter.

BarCampJozi: Flickr vs Picasa

Scott Gray has initiated a Flickr vs Picasa debate. His argument is helped by 2 things:
1. Picasa crashing
2. No Mac version.
But aside from that I’d recommend it for Windows users – I already installed it for my Dad.

BarCampJozi: Open Source Software and Business

Anton from Obsidian took a great session on OSS and Business, especially looking at the kinds of people who tend to play with open source and their subsequent entry into the business world. Here are my notes (more for myself, so not edited properly):

BarCampJozi: eXtreme Programming

Danie from Acolyte did a really interesting session on XP (Extreme Programming) – a software programming methodology and nothing to do with extreme ironing whatsoever. Says he.

BarCampJozi

We’re in the Sci-Bono centre in Newtown – around 30 or so geeks. I guess we could describe today as “chaordic” but fun! Mike’s posted a series of images already in pursuit of becoming the official BarCamp blogger. Somebody get him a t-shirt.

Pete le Roux started us off with “Elephant’s Dream.” Awesome stuff – it’s a 12 minute animated movie released under the Creative Commons license and beginning to be broadcast all around the world. What also makes it special is that all of the software tools used to create the film are open source (specifically Blender). Pete has contributed in his own way to the project, by proof-reading the Afrikaans sub-titles! *sigh* Fame is so difficult to handle…
Jaryd from OpenLabs was playing around with Blender on his linux box pretty much the whole day. He’s taught himself since about January this year and seems pretty good. Pete should post them sometime.

The guys from OpenLab gave us their new live cd (which didn’t work on my Mac – sorry to AJ for breaking it) and showed of their comic book series on open source distributed in Namibia.

[UPDATE] Dinesh from devkungfoo is also here :)
