Museum of Media History – a documentary made in 2014 (!) looking back over our history.

They’ve coded a Firefox extension called “SearchStatus.” According to the online description:

For every site you visit using Firefox or Mozilla, SearchStatus lets you view its Google PageRank, Google Category, Alexa popularity ranking, Alexa incoming links, Alexa related links and backward links from Google, Yahoo! and MSN – all in one place. This combined search-related information means you can view not only the link importance of a site (according to Google), but also its traffic importance (according to Alexa), so providing a balanced view of site efficacy.

Freakonomics
Fish!

Anton from Obsidian took a great session on OSS and Business, especially looking at the kinds of people who tend to play with open source and their subsequent entry into the business world. Here are my notes (more for myself, so not edited properly):

Technorati Tags: barcamp, BarCampJozi, open source

“The e-myth revisited.” <- a great book.

Major challenges:
- Focus. So many different things to do and so many different ways to make money…it’s easy to lose focus. Pick one things you’re good at and stick with that.
- Business Model – very NB!! If I’m selling hours, how am I billing that out? What am I going to charge and how many hours do I need to work?
- Find a value proposition – trying to explain to a suit why this is important. You have to find a way to make the cool tools that you’re playing with interesting to a business person who’s playing golf.
- Skills that you need…some don’t come naturally to a geek so either learn them or get someone in who has no tech skills.
- Google Ads (the geek way of fixing marketing)
- Client care (post-product follow-up)
- The Peter Principle: everyone gets promoted to their level of incompetence.
- Be aware of the divide between tech people and business people, and how you can bring the 2 together.
- Managing people from a legal and HR perspective.
- Different business models for making money from OSS:

- Sell the software
- Selling proprietry extensions to OSS
- Services. Subscription model (like Red Hat)
- Training. Certifications.
- Look at what Google is doing with OSS (tessarat OCR)

OSS in SA – Red Hat, banks, etc. Ubuntu is really making any entry into this sector.

For more info: the Agile Manifesto. The particular principles I could benefit from now:
Business people and developers must work together daily throughout the project.
The most efficient and effective method of conveying information to and within a development team is face-to-face conversation. (What?! No email?!)
Working software is the primary measure of progress.
At regular intervals, the team reflects on how to become more effective, then tunes and adjusts its behavior accordingly.
Here’s their introduction piece:
Individuals and interactions over processes and tools
Working software over comprehensive documentation
Customer collaboration over contract negotiation
Responding to change over following a plan

We’re in the Sci-Bono centre in Newtown – around 30 or so geeks. I guess we could describe today as “chaordic” but fun! Mike’s posted a series of images already in pursuit of becoming the official BarCamp blogger. Somebody get him a t-shirt.

Pete le Roux started us off with “Elephant’s Dream.” Awesome stuff – it’s a 12 minute animated movie released under the Creative Commons license and beginning to be broadcast all around the world. What also makes it special is that all of the software tools used to create the film are open source (specifically Blender). Pete has contributed in his own way to the project, by proof-reading the Afrikaans sub-titles! *sigh* Fame is so difficult to handle…
Jaryd from OpenLabs was playing around with Blender on his linux box pretty much the whole day. He’s taught himself since about January this year and seems pretty good. Pete should post them sometime.

The guys from OpenLab gave us their new live cd (which didn’t work on my Mac – sorry to AJ for breaking it) and showed of their comic book series on open source distributed in Namibia.

[UPDATE] Dinesh from devkungfoo is also here
